The quick answer
A well-fitted harness should sit securely without squeezing, remain reasonably centred and allow your dog to move naturally. Straps should lie flat, stay away from sensitive rubbing points and be adjusted so the dog cannot easily reverse out.
Buying the correct size is step one.
Adjusting it properly is step two.
And step two is the part that's easy to rush when somebody is already standing by the front door demanding their walk.
1. Start with your dog's actual measurements
Don't choose a harness because another dog of the same breed wears a medium.
Dogs with the same breed and weight can still have very different proportions.
Measure your dog's neck and the widest part of their chest and compare those numbers with the specific product's size chart.

2. Look at where the harness sits
Once fitted, stand back.
The harness should sit evenly rather than obviously twisting to one side.
Make sure:
- Straps aren't twisted.
- The neckline isn't pressing into the throat.
- The harness isn't rubbing underneath the front legs.
- Your dog can move their shoulders comfortably.
3. Check the space beneath the straps
For Pawda harnesses, our current fitting guidance uses being able to comfortably slide two fingers between the harness and your dog as a useful check.
It shouldn't squeeze.
But it shouldn't hang away from the body either.
4. Check it when your dog moves
Standing still tells you only part of the story.
Walk around the room.
Turn.
Let your dog sniff.
See whether the harness shifts dramatically, rides towards the throat or starts rubbing beneath the front legs.
5. Think about backing out
A loose harness can become a particular problem when a dog suddenly reverses.
Before leaving home, make sure the fit doesn't create an obvious escape route.
If you aren't confident that the harness is secure, don't rely on wishful thinking. Recheck the size and adjustment.
6. Recheck regularly
Dogs change.
Puppies grow. Weight changes. Coats become thicker or thinner. Straps can also move over time.
A fit that was right months ago isn't automatically right today.
